When to call
Call the Focal Point the same day when:
- a child tells you that someone is hurting them, or that something is wrong
- you notice a change in a child that worries you, even if you have no proof
- you see another adult break the Code of Conduct
- you are unsure whether something is a concern. Suspicion is enough; you do not need evidence.
If you cannot reach the Focal Point
- Childline Kenya: 116. Free, any phone, 24 hours. Call it if you cannot reach the Focal Point, and tell the Focal Point afterwards.
- If a child is in immediate danger, call the police on 999 or 112.
Keep trying the Focal Point. A call to Childline or the police does not replace the report to SSPSK.
Have this ready
- the date and time
- where it happened and who was there
- what the child said, in their own words where you can
- what you said in reply
The Concern Record is a form for exactly this. Write it before the details fade, within the first two hours.
What not to do
- Do not investigate. Do not question the child again.
- Do not contact the family or the person named.
- Do not promise secrecy. Say: "I need to tell someone who can help."
- Do not discuss it with other coaches, parents or on social media.
What the Focal Point does
The Focal Point decides what happens next: whether to inform the school, the child's parents, the Children's Office or the police, and makes those notifications. They keep a confidential record. You will be told what you need to know, and nothing more.
For page numbers on every page, choose Margins: Default in the print dialog (under More settings).
